Hey friends!
So I was catching up with an old friend the other day over coffee. I asked her how work was going, and she told me her work woes: she’s under appreciated and underpaid at a dead end job she doesn’t like; she wants to quit, go back to school and find a better job, but she’s not sure what she wants to do. Does this sound like anyone you know? Maybe it sounds like you.
I started explaining the MLS program to her and all the potential routes it can take. She’s been wanting to go into graphic design and marketing so she can work in advertising. I told her the MLS program only requires a Bachelors, regardless of the field. (My Bachelors is in Theatre, come on.) She loves finding information, data mining, surveys, etc and has office experience to boot…Did I mention that all of these can be found in the MLS program? I brought up the idea of working for the public library system – health benefits, vision, dental, retirement, even tuition assistance!
“I’d like a nice quiet desk job, and I love to read!”
…AND BINGO WAS HIS NAME-O! I emailed her FSU’s MLS program website (along with a link to Brash Librarian!) and our county public library’s application website – which also happened to have an open library position! She’s already applied for the library position, and is looking into the MLS program along with getting her Bachelors!
And that’s how it’s done, children. Lowering the average age of MLS students, one recruit at a time. You stay classy kids!

I feel the same way your feels! I graduated in ’09 I double majored in International Relations and English. I was so young I don’t think I knew what I wanted to do. I’ve been working dead end jobs…the job I have now is okay I work at home so that’s a plus but I’m still chained to this desk in a sort of call center job except I’m doing it from home. I hate it. When I thought about what would make me happy and what I have always wanted to do I had this “aha!” moment and I started looking up the path to being a librarian. I’m enrolled now at Clarion working on my B.A. in Education with Library Science Concentration which is good because I needed to work on my GPA, its my first semester but since I have a B.A. already I’m graduating next semester than off to get the MLS and I am SO happy because I KNOW I am finally in the right place. I love hearing stories like this 🙂
Why thank you! Comments like this are why I do this blog. If I can help one person find their path, then I’ve done my job.
MEN: While I’m at it, please note how incredibly attractive this lady is. Yes, hotties work at the library, so you better get down there. Better yet, join the MLS program – the women to men ratio is very high!
*friend…pardon my typo 🙂
