Brash to The Future!

WHOOSH!

Hello friends! Happy Friday the 13th! I heard Michael Myers and Jason were trying to be crossing guards this morning in Sunnydale and caused some accidents – someone told me traffic was especially a nightmare on elm street.

Justin

C’mon, admit you chuckled a little.

Getting back on track, we’re going for a quick jaunt into the past, courtesy of the Miami-Dade Public Library System.

Many Floridians and librarians have heard about the crisis befalling the Miami-Dade Public Library System; to nutshell it for our fans, budget woes threatened to close 49 public libraries and lay off 169 employees. However, I’m happy to announce that County Commissioners have voted to dig into reserve funds to keep staff and libraries going, according to the Miami Herald this week. This means Miami friends get to keep their libraries! (I’m looking at you, Ricci.)

BOOKS FOR ALL!

Meanwhile, local artist Barron Sherer has digitized over 200 Kodachrome slides from the system’s archives; some of them can be seen in this Huffington Post article. According the article, the photos were taken for posterity from 1959 to 1962. Miami-Dade Public Library Director Raymond Santiago stated, “The library is not just an assembly of books and a collection of special objects preserving local culture…It has always been a civic place and will increasingly become a meeting place for creativity where meaningful collaborations emerge, great ideas are formulated and where important things happen.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself. Unless I’m going for the caveman approach.

BOOKS GOOD, LIBRARIES BETTER. HULK BE CREATIVE AND IMPORTANT!

My favorite slide? Technical Processing from 1961.

Wow, tech services has come a long way.

Quite different, eh? No computers, barcodes, scanners, all paper and punch cards. It’s a shame we can’t go back there and see what is was like…

…OR CAN WE?!?

88 mph and we're off!

But he was on time for work in Palatka!

Can I just say that I really enjoy putting my face into famous things? I think my next one may be a TARDIS for the all the Dr. Who fans out there.

Have a safe and fun weekend, everyone!

Brash Getting Random.

Oh, hello there!

So I got some time to finally write a little, and I realized…I’m not sure what to write about this time. More stuff about mud racing? Unusual Librarians Who Rock? Job-related stuff? More garbage about how awesome I am?

DA FREEDOM, IT STIFLING ME.

Let’s jump into a bunch of random stuff. I’ll start with something that isn’t me – let’s wish happy birthday to a special fan, msnoseinabook! She’s probably my earliest fan/subscriber who wasn’t already a friend or family member. In fact, she’s from another state and I’ve never met her in my life – but we’re friends on Facebook, that means we’re friends in real life as well!

Now then, back to me…Moving into my new apartment in Palatka has been pretty fun. I’ve been trying to exorcise the inner hoarder and live a clutter-free life. Thankfully, I have help from my Brash Sidekick Katy! Yes, she is the Queen of Clean, the Empress of Spotless, The Heroine of Hygiene, The Huntress of Hoarders…I’ll stop before she punches me. As I get rid of stuff, I get to look at stuff I’ve missed as I unpack it. Awards are always fun to look at!

My student senate award brought back some memories from being the SCUBA Diving Club senator.

Hall of Famer, right here.

This next award, I won for my amazing essay on George Romero’s use of his zombie trilogy (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead) as social commentary on racism, consumerism and other aspects of American culture. I presented my paper at the BTN conference held at Disney’s conference center – and 1st place couldn’t attend, so I got to have all the attention!

Yes, I’m aware of the irony here.

I think I’ll hang these at work. Speaking of work, things are going well! Rolling out some top-secret stuff I can’t talk about just yet, but I can mention that we now have a Facebook page! Granted, we don’t have much of anything on it yet, but that will come as we roll out some of the other new stuff. Stop by and like us at facebook.com/putnamlib (lib as in library)! While I work on hanging these, take a look at my office door and all its (lack of) splendor:

I really like magnets and Stark Industries. I think a Wayne-Tech magnet is next.

Yes, I know it’s a bit sparse, but working on it. When I’m not exorcising my hoarding demons, I’m exercising like a wicked demon. November’s Tough Mudder race is ticking closer and closer, and I learned from the last Superhero Scramble that I needed more hydration. Sorry, race guys, but 3 water stations during an 8 mile race just didn’t cut it – and I don’t plan on that happening again. I needed something lightweight that won’t slow me down and something sleek that won’t get in my way. That’s when I found this guy!

And I even like the color!

Camelbak’s 70 oz monster was just what I had in mind. Compact, light, streamlined, no bulky or frivolous pockets, and a sternum strap to keep everything locked down tight while running, jumping, climbing, etc. I’ve already taken it for a practice run and like the way it sits. However, I feel the flap on the back is a little easy to undo; I think I’ll sew on some velcro to ensure it stays in place while jostling around.

So tell me…what do you enjoy seeing on here? What would you like see more of?

Feel free to comment below, or share your thoughts on Brash Librarian’s Facebook page. For the love of cupcakes, please tell me what makes you all smile (besides more posts).
I look forward to hearing from you!

The Brash Librarian Returns

HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

No, I’m not dead. It’s been over a month since I’ve had a chance to really get back into this, and let me say that I’ve missed you guys. I’ve been super busy diving head-first into the new job, moving, the Superhero Scramble, and just taking some time to get centered. Let’s jump in, there’s tons to cover!

Firstly, the Brash Librarian’s Facebook now has over 100 followers! YAY!

Before we get into the work, let’s rewind to the weekend before starting the job back in April when I ran the Superhero Scramble’s 8-mile Intimidator Challenge Race in May. Having ran multiple 5Ks now, I decided it was time to kick it up a notch. As I’m running in the Tough Mudder at the end of the year, I decided an 8-mile race was a good barometer to test my skills.

Oh boy.

Let’s do a quick breakdown here:

Time I wanted to do it in: 2 hours or less

Time I actually did it in: 3 hours, 8 minutes

In the British military elite, the Special Air Service (SAS) starts recruits with a combat fitness test: an 8-mile run carrying a 55+ lbs backpack; I figure I’m not carrying a pack, but guessed the obstacles would slow me down to make it fair. I know I’m pushing myself, that’s the whole point! Unlike the last Scramble I ran, this one was much more water-intensive. Two portions of the race included swimming – upstream, no less – for 400 yards. EMTs told me the lifeguards had to fish a few people out who got too tired to finish. (Thankfully, I wasn’t one of them.) Other obstacles were welcome such as the “Hell froze over” where I jumped a small fire line into a pool of iced down water. That felt so good, I wish they’d had a few of these!

That water was ICE cold. It felt amazing.

I also realized I’ve put on some weight since then. While it’s both muscle and fat, I feel it could be more muscle. Eh, just time to up my cardio. I’ll admit, I ran out of steam while running and learned I definitely need to work on my endurance. I’m totally in shape for a 5k, but Tough Mudder will break me if I don’t adjust and improve. I recommend the “couch to 10k trainer” (C210k) app, they also have a 5k version and both are free.

Mud crawl under barbed wire? Done.

While I recommend gloves, I’ve decided to try full fingered gloves next time. I cut the tips off my thumb, index and middle fingers for better dexterity, but I realize I’ve yet to find an obstacle that really called for fine motor skills. That, and I tore my thumbnail going over a wall – which wouldn’t have happened if I’d been wearing full gloves.

Bicep pose!

Once again, wrapping my wrists with tape was a brilliant idea. I nearly torqued it a few times on those high walls. I got to make some new friends and trade some tips. My new friend Kayla works at a running store near Orlando and is planning on hitting the Tough Mudder as well. Here’s to hoping! Somebody’s gotta drag me across the finish line, might as well be someone I know.

Yeah, that’s right. GIMME MAH MEDAL

I’ve also learned the importance of hydration. There were maybe three water stations the entire way through, the first one being about 4 miles in. That’s halfway through, for people keeping track. My lips were cracked and dry from no fluids. NO, not cool. I don’t know what Tough Mudder is going to have for water stations, but I’m running with a Camelbak next time.

Where was I? Oh right, work.

As mentioned in my last post, I left UF’s Archives to become the Social Media Marketing and Technical Services Manager, AKA “the new media manager”, “technical services manager”, “social media guy”, “Facebook director”, “IT guy who isn’t really IT”, “Excuse me sir, this computer is frozen”…and “Kevin”. No, really, that was my name for a week. So what all have I been doing? EVERYTHING. Let’s do some walking and talking, shall we?

My office on day one! Yes, it’s less bare now.

My predecessor for this position sadly passed away and her second in command quit before I arrived, which made for one giant nightmare. How did most days go at first? Almost every phone call to our vendors, suppliers, etc went something like this:

[Vendor on phone]: Thank you for calling, can I get your account number please?

Me: I don’t have it.

[Vendor]: No problem, can I get your user ID?

Me: I don’t know the ID.

[Vendor]: That’s alright, can I get the name and email associated with the account?

Me: I don’t know those, either.

[Vendor]: I’m not sure I can really help then. Is there anyone there who knows?

Me: (explains my situation it pitiful tone and pleads for help)

[Vendor]: Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear that! I’d be happy to help you out!

Let me just say that all of our vendors, particularly The Library Corporation (TLC), were incredibly helpful! I think I’m on first-name basis with every one of their support people. On the plus side, having nothing to work with means you get to make whatever you want! I started asking what people liked about the way things were, what they didn’t, and slowly started building bit by bit. We haven’t worked out all the kinks yet, but steady as she goes.

Welcome to Technical Services! Or Wayne-Tech. Or Stark Industries.

In the last month I’ve learned about editing, creating and deleting catalog records, how to use our circulation system, processing books from receiving them in the mail to getting them on the shelf, spine labels, putting covers on paperbacks and dust jackets, learning where all of our branches are (Palatka, Crescent City, Melrose, Interlachen and Bostwick) and delivering books to them, supply orders, computer repair, taking photos of children’s programs for the library website, and a few dozen other things that escape my mind at present. Long story short, people like ABC and hate XYZ – and I’ve gotten it to ABZ…not perfect, but getting there. However, I credit all my success here to the people of Putnam County’s staff. Everyone here has been so nice, warm, welcoming, helpful and I can’t thank them enough for the support they’ve already shown me. Thank you to all who have made me feel at home! Especially if you read the nonsense I write on here!

The rest of my domain!

That’s about all I have for this week, but I hope you’ve all enjoyed it. I’ll keep you guys in the loop as I get this whole job under control.

Stay Brash as always, and don’t forget to follow the Brashest of Brash on Facebook!

THE WAIT IS OVER. THE RUMORS ARE TRUE.

Hey Brash Kids!

It’s been a long week or two. Some of you knew it was my birthday on the 21st, along with going to Disney World for Star Wars Weekends, running in the Superhero Scramble’s 8-mile mud race, and getting ready for my NEW JOB! All that other stuff I’ll get to later, but I want to focus on the NEW JOB first.

Many of my friends, UF coworkers, and those who follow me on Facebook know that I’ve been applying for jobs here and there, curious to see what’s out there and who might be interested. I’ve alluded to the idea of a new job in recent posts, but I wanted to keep my cards secret for awhile; I had enough trouble posting while juggling classes and everything else, so I took a break this last week from posting to play catch-up with life, the universe, and everything entailed in such. At this point, it is my pleasure to announce that I am now the Social Media Marketing and Technical Services Manager for the Putnam County Library System!

“Wow Justin, that’s a long title! That sounds like alot of work!”

Right you are, impressed and/or intimidated voice in my head! I’ll be working with the social media aspects (Facebook, Twitter, etc), the marketing (partnerships, flyers, etc) and tech services (Kindle/computer classes, acquisitions, technology in general).

I started on Tuesday and I was planning on posting this earlier this week, but the high energy of a new environment has really been taking it out of me! Getting home around 5, sleeping til 9, going grocery shopping, running and back in bed for another thrilling day. My boss said I should relax, so I’ll decompress this weekend and tell you guys all about the other stuff soon.

Stay tuned for more next week! In the meantime, enjoy the comic that inspired the title. New job, new hero…

Seeing the Signs…Brash Signs!

Hey Friends!

It’s been a pretty fun week here, though very wonky. Some of our work can be confusing at times, so I made up a few signs to help my fellow coworkers make sure they’re putting the right books in the right spots. Then it hit me: I need a post about funny signs. Time to scour the interwebs and see who has made sillier signs than mine:

I’d be more terrified if I went in with a dog and got a free kid.

SERIOUSLY.

Sir Mix-a-lot probably gets books here.

Having troubles with your pages?

Or if you try to argue that Sean Connery isn’t the best Bond.

I’m starting to sense a theme here about food and drinks…

Those libraries and their sneaky french fry cameras.

This has got to be my favorite one.

Okay, I get it. These people REALLY don’t like food and drinks in their libraries and near computers.

Aww! Just don’t expect me to give loud patrons mouth-to-mouth.

A clear problem and a clear solution. Perfect.

Libraries don’t play.

…Batman?!?

A little overt, but reasonable.

How many kids are chewing on cords?

And what does the Brash Librarian have to say to all this?

I’m such a rebel. I also brought in an espresso, a bat, a puppy and a screaming child. I also chewed on power cables and put all my food/drinks/pets by the computer station.

Got some exciting news coming up soon! It’s all in the grand reveal…

How about you guys – got any silly/cool/wicked awesome signs you wish to share? Post them to my Facebook page for all to enjoy! Join up, we’re just a few people away from having 100 likes! Be one the Brash kids and like me on Facebook!

Until next week, kids!

Brash Librarian Hits FLA! Again!

Good day, friends!

Yup, it’s that time of year again! Last week, I hit the Florida Library Association (FLA) conference in Orlando, and yet again had a super-rockin’ good time. If you haven’t been reading my blog for too long, you can read about my first trip to FLA here. It was so nice to see familiar faces from last year – along with meeting some new ones! I stayed with my good friend and Brash Sidekick Katy for the conference – and she brought me baked goods! AHHH! Yummy!

Reunited with my Brash Sidekick, Katy! We look like Terminators. :p

Got my super-sweet badge. That’s right, I work for UF libraries. I DO WHAT I WANT.

Opening day started off really well – one of the first people Katy and I ran into was my Marketing and Storytelling professor, Dr. Koontz! The general assembly starting the conference was quite fun! Scholarships, awards and other fun stuff kicked off the day. After that, it was non-stop fun. Seminars, workshops, roundtable discussions, exhibits, all the goodies!

Dr. K in all her FSU attire. I’m not that big, she’s just that tiny. Check out her totally awesome boots!

Around lunchtime came the FSU student mixer, where I got to make new friends – and even got recognized! We started off the mixer with introducing ourselves – when I introduced myself and where I was from, a girl nearly leapt out of her chair and exclaimed, “Oh my gosh! You’re the Brash Librarian!” and explained that we’d had a class together and she’d read my blog. If I wasn’t feeling awesome before, I sure was now. A special shout-out to my new friends Laura, Mary and Tim. Congratulations to Laura on receiving the FLA FSU Scholarship! And thanks to Mary for making my day. 🙂

A little hard to see, but I’m that really tall guy in the back. Oh wait, I’m almost the ONLY guy. One of the many perks of library school.

Following the mixer came an awesome tech presentation courtesy of the Orange County Library System (OCLS) based in Orlando. Some of their toys and gadgets were SO cool! Their children’s program has implemented Snap Circuits, a great new toy series that teaches children about electricity and lets them create their own devices. I got a photo or two of their snap kits:

Just snap it together and go! This example is an FM radio.

All the parts and accessories fit into these snazzy cases! I’d feel like Q handling this box. “Now pay attention, 007…”

Throughout the demonstrations, there was a little black box with blue lights making lots of whirring noises. Near the end, they revealed it to be their 3D printer! Using computer programs like Auto CAD, people can design objects and let the printer make the object. Using high heat and plastic polymer on a spool, it goes layer by layer to recreate the programmed item. For the demonstration, they printed a miniature Mayan temple. It took about 45 minutes to print, but it’s quite amazing. Take a look at that detail!

Mini temple, taken in my hand to show scale.

Look at each little step and the door way! Very precise!

Still not impressed? This chain was printed all at once. Yup, every link was printed interlocked at the same time. Simply awesome!

A 3D printer! Yes, that’s an airplane make from K’NEX next to it.

Just when I thought the presentation couldn’t get any better, Laura got up to go volunteer elsewhere without realizing her foot had fallen asleep. While she would describe it as a faceplant, I would call it more of a stumble. Of course, Laura recovered with grace in full lady-like fashion. Great recovery, Laura! If I’d done that, I would have hit the floor and taken a few little old ladies with me. Maybe even spill a coffee.

Later in the day, I hit the exhibition hall and got free goodies. Pins, comics, flash drives, pens, headphones, stickers, bookmarks and more. However, I learned my lesson that I need to go with Katy. She knows how to get ALL the secret stuff. My favorite place was the Ask A Librarian stand, where they had a cardboard superhero display. WIN! My newfound friend and Ask A Librarian buddy Jessica took my photo. How could my super nerdy, comic book-loving self pass this up?

My library needs me. Up, up, and AWAY!

Of course, I had to hit up my peeps over at the FSU library school desk.

Two my professors (Dr. Mon and Dr. Koontz) and Pam “womanning” the FSU booth in the exhibition hall. Who that lurker on the side is, I have no idea.

Later in the evening was the FSU Alum mixer, where I got to say hi to more professors and the Dean of our college; afterwards, I had the pleasure of having dinner with the Dean and a few select people to discuss how the college can better connect to their distance learners such as myself. That’s right, big wigs took the time for an intimate dinner to pick student brains so can help them feel more at home. I feel honored to go to a school that cares about their students that much.

The morning of the second day, I decided to watch the children’s performer showcase. Here, performers put on 5-10 minute demos of their acts to display their talents; library managers can hire them to perform for their summer library programs. Some highlights I took photos of:

A giant picture book that popped up and told different stories on each page! In this photo, Jack and Jill are going up the hill.

A musical duo that sings about space, dirt, animals, whatever your program calls for. Great singing voices!

This guy was my favorite! He did juggling, magic, spinning plates, all kinds of stuff! He was so entertaining, I nearly forgot to grab a photo. (Oh, and he’s got two more plates spinning out of frame. He’s GOOD.)

Mimes, puppeteers, your library can give you nearly anything for your summer programs.

This guy must be awesome at raves.

The day was filled with workshops on social media, marketing, librarianship, technology…There were plenty others, I’m only mentioning the ones I went to. There’s something for everyone!

New friends Blake and Laura set up shop and demonstrated the power and uses of Google Scholar. They were preaching to the choir, but I’ll never turn down a chance to play with an iPad.

And now for a completely unrelated shout-out! Before I left for the convention, my library friend Molly bought me a PEZ candy dispenser. I didn’t understand why until I realized that it was an Obi-wan Kenobi from Star Wars and IT. LOOKS. JUST. LIKE. ME. It’s almost spooky. Molly manages the Cedar Key Public Library, and I know their Friends of the Library (FOL) is putting on a celebration this week called “Our library is a treasure”…if their library is a treasure, then Molly is the crown jewel. A special thanks to Molly for my uncanny doppelganger candy dispenser!

IT’S UNCANNY.

That’s all I’ve got for this week. New logo ideas are coming along with some other good stuff in the pipeline. Stay tuned for next week’s post.

Stay cool, librarians!

Library Week Double Feature: Book Sales and More Crazy Books!

Hello there!

I know, I know…Thursday studying and paper writing got the better of me and I wound up missing Thursdays Library Week posting. Never fear, all we need is a double feature to turn that frown upside down!

Firstly, time to give people what they need. I’ve had many local people ask if there is a Friends of the Library (FOL) book sale coming up. There is, indeed! The Alachua County Spring FOL book sale starts tomorrow (Saturday) the 20th and runs to the 24th of this month. FOL Book House is located downtown at 430 N. Main Street in Gainesville. To save time and trouble, their news release is as follows:

All the profits from this low-overhead volunteer effort will be used for the Alachua County Library District and community literacy projects. More than 500,000 books and other items in more than 50 categories will go on sale starting April 20. Both hardback and paperback books are available, with most priced from 25 cents to $4. The collection includes a vast array of classical and modern fiction, children’s and young adults’ books, textbooks from preschool through graduate school, large-print books, cookbooks, hobby books, audio books, music CD’s, videotapes and DVD’s, manga, comic books, magazines, framed artwork, posters, records, games and puzzles, video games, computer software and more.

ALSO: The Collector’s Corner will be open Saturday through Tuesday. This unique feature of the book sale offers special items including first editions, signed copies and rare books for purchase at fair prices. The Collector’s Corner is located in a separate area at the sale.

This only occurs only twice a year, so get in while the getting is good! Spring hours are:

Saturday, April 20, 9 am to 6 pm

Sunday, April 21, 1 to 6 pm

Monday, April 22, 12 to 7 pm

Tuesday, April 23, 12 to 7 pm – everything in the general collection is half price

Wednesday, April 24, 12 to 6 pm – everything is 10 cents

Any other details can be found here.

Now it’s time to give you what you really want…

CRAZY BOOKS!

Again, the Brash Librarian has reached into the UF archives to bring you the silliest and strangest books money can’t buy. Here we go:

Where what’s at?

Well excuse ME, Mr. Stickler.

Thanks bro, I really needed help finding that barcode.

The Redundancy Dept. of Redundancy strikes again.

Okay, this one is actually cool. The spine was ripped and revealed old pages when peeled back. Germans recycled their old/bad pages to make book spines – well done!

Unclassified information? I feel like a secret agent holding this.

Yes, that’s really the book. Don’t believe me? Look at the next one.

Told you so.

SHUT UP BOOK. YOU DON’T KNOW ME

I was really hoping this was about a county full of ninjas.

That’s really something Harvard should be bragging about…

What do you mean, “students”? Did these “students” “collect” these “papers” for a “Mr. Gosset”?

I didn’t know entire books were written on this subject.

I hope you enjoyed laughing as much as I did. This concludes National Library Week, I hope you’ve all had a pleasant time – I know I did. Now if only this semester would end, that would be lovely.

Stay Brash, crazy and support your libraries!

National Library Week – Live Dangerously!

Sorry, sorry!

I know, it’s Midnight and I’ve been super tired. Such is the life of a graduating library genius. I’ve been working too hard and living dangerously. Speaking of which, live dangerously with a challenged book!

The American Library Association’s list of challenged books have something for everyone! (I’m personally a fan of Captain Underpants.)

screen-capture-4

Don’t forget, Thursday (now today) is Bat Day! Thank you for reminding me, Cindy. Be sure to support Bat day with something Bat or Batman-related. I’m totally rocking a Batman shirt to work in the morning. Stay Brash and Batty,

Justin Brasher, Bat Librarian

National Library Week – Worker’s day!

Yup, it’s still Tuesday. Time for post two of this week!

Print your free poster!

Today is National Library Worker’s Day! NLWD is a day for library staff, users, administrators and Friends groups to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers. So the American Library Association and Allied Professionals Association’s NLWD page asks:

How will you celebrate
National Library Workers Day?

  • Talk about pay equity (and inequities) by using ideas from The Better Salaries and Pay Equity Toolkit
  • Submit a Star – Tell everyone what makes a library employee special by submitting your favorite worker’s name and why they are wonderful to the NLWD site.
  • How will you celebrate? – Look at our celebration ideas page for suggestions from us and other libraries.
  • And more!

In other news…for those who saw yesterday’s blog post on Easter candy:

I REALLY, REALLY HAVE A PROBLEM.

Stay appreciated, chocolatey and peanut buttery!
